Reaction to the Statement by the President of the Republic of Croatia, Zoran Milanović

Large srebrenica

Zagreb, September 15, 2022

PRESIDENT MILANOVIĆ, START SPEAKING CLEARLY AND UNDOUBTEDLY, OPENLY AND TRUTHFULLY ABOUT THE GENOCIDE IN SREBRENICA THAT HAPPENED IN JULY 1995!

Stop relativizing the facts established in the judgments of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and other international and national courts.

It is your duty to represent Croatia in the country and abroad in a way that is consistent with the values on which this society rests. Arguing about the genocide in Srebrenica is certainly not in accordance with the principles of the rule of law, peacemaking, freedom, and equality.

Due to the narcissistic, irresponsible, and murderous policies of the leadership during the nineties, societies, human integrity, and dignity were destroyed, and the consequences of such fratricidal wars are still being experienced today in the form of inter-ethnic and inter-national intolerance.

Understanding and reconciliation between peoples are not possible without demythologizing the recent past.

Instead of using your position to speak courageously and responsibly about the causes and consequences of the wars of the 1990s in a way that puts the victims, regardless of their ethnicity, in the foreground, you are guided by petty nationalistic impulses.

Stop it and finally focus your attention on the victims, dedicate yourself to thinking about how to reduce inter-ethnic and inter-national tensions, and speak publicly about the facts that marked the nineties.

You are leaving the evil of war with unresolved consequences for future generations to live in feuding, ethnocentric communities. You have no right to that.
